About: About Us

Who we are:

Hi, I’m Fiona, the founder, publisher and editor of flokka.

I created flokka because I meet lots of women who are passionate about their businesses, but who at times can feel isolated. Flokka is a way of bringing women in business together, to share our business passions and to support, encourage and learn from each other.

As women in business and leadership we generally also want to get better at what we’re doing and we also want to ‘make a difference’ in the world in some way. So flokka has an inward focus (about empowering you and developing your business) and an outward focus (about being part of something bigger, making a positive influence in your sphere of life and impacting on your family, community and world).

Flokka is also a way to showcase to the world the positive way women are doing business.

We use our community of blogs as the medium to make this happen. As a writer and publisher, I love that blogging gives each of us a simple but powerful platform to voice our thoughts, reflections, ideas, expertise and business journeys… and allows us to connect and converse with other women in business from around the world. And that RSS feeds make it easy to customise the blog content we read - like our very own magazine - so we can keep on top of trends, news and information.

But blogging in isolation can be hard work, just like running a business can be, so that’s why we’re a community of women in business blogs. We’re not alone!

My own blogging journey began in 2001 on Blogger but I was so intimidated by the fact that anyone, anywhere could read and ‘comment’, it didn’t really get off the ground. In 2005 I started a number of anonymous blogs and then a business blog. Now I’m addicted - and I’m keen for other women in business to discover blogging as a great tool to build their personal and business brand.

My business journey began in 1995 when I launched Her Business magazine, a magazine for women in business (although I had no publishing experience) and went on to grow the business and the brand to include awards, conferences and national networks for women in business. When I sold Her Business Group in 2003 I continued niche publishing and working with networking organisations and self development programmes. In 2006 I developed ‘entrepreneurette’ which evolved from an online business and self development program, to online mastermind groups, to an online community and magazine for women in business, as I explored various web 2.0 tools. Now I’ve come back full circle to blogging, publishing and communities. And so flokka began…

I look forward to meeting you here on flokka and hearing about your business dreams and your business journey.

Where we’re based:

We work from a home office located in Laingholm, a small community on the western outskirts of Auckland, New Zealand’s largest city. We are surrounded by bush and overlook the Manakau harbour, with a backdrop of the sound of tuis and bell birds. A five minute drive away is the local village of Titirangi with fabulous cafes and restaurants always spilling over with artists, musicians, and the self-employed creatives the area is renown for.

New Zealand is a small country of four million people and 40 million sheep located to the east of Australia. We are famous for our stunning landscapes, our passion for rugby and sailing and our innovativeness and grit when it comes to business. We are a nation of small businesses with 89 percent of New Zealand enterprises having five or fewer (full-time equivalent) employees, contributing to 29 percent of all employment in New Zealand.

Flokka values and guiding principles:

Simplicity
Life is chaotic already… we’re busy women… we believe simple is better… in everything - site functionality, systems, communication… everything.

Fun and passion
You have to be enjoying your experience here and we have to have fun making it all happen for you. Otherwise why do it?

Purpose
Why are we doing what we’re doing? Our purpose and passion is to provide a space for women in business to blog and connect; so through our voices and our dialogues together we can positively influence our lives and the lives of others.

Abundance
Your experience here has to be of value to you - in terms of time, financially and in meaningfulness; and ditto for us.And we’re guided by the principles of community; connection, collaboration, sharing, mutual support, nurture and love.
